Dr. Maxwell's interest in animal behavior began while she was an undergraduate at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. During this time, she was studying Psychology and volunteering at the local animal shelter. Dr. Maxwell was surprised and dismayed by the number of pets coming through the shelter system (and many never leaving that system) because of behavior problems. She switched her focus in Psychology to animal learning and behavior and began to study in the field of Behavior Analysis.
Dr. Maxwell came to West Virginia University in 1999 to work with Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist Dr. Andy Lattal. Dr. Lattal and Megan saw several clients in Morgantown in 2000-2001.
After completing her Master's degree, Dr. Maxwell returned to her hometown of Philadelphia, PA, where she started a private practice. In her practice, she worked in collaboration with local veterinarians, who referred clients for behavioral consultations and treatment. After practicing for three years in Philadelphia, Dr. Maxwell returned to Morgantown to complete her Ph.D. She recently completed her dissertation research while continuing her private practice in Morgantown. Dr. Maxwell also currently serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor in West Virginia University's Department of Psychology, where she teaches courses on animal learning and behavior. Dr. Maxwell has extensive experience with pet dogs, cats, and birds. She has volunteered over the years at multiple animal shelters and continues to show a strong interest in working to minimize the number of animals who enter the shelter system because of behavior problems. In her research with pet dogs, she asks questions related to ways in which pets might learn more quickly using methods that owners are more likely to implement, so that these pets may remain in their home in happy, behaviorally healthy relationships with their human family.
Dr. Maxwell received her Certification as an Applied Animal Behaviorist from the Animal Behavior Society in 2004. What is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist?
